La Jolla Fish : The Garibaldi!
The garibaldi or garibaldi damselfish (Hypsypops rubicundus) is a fish of the damselfish family that is native to the northern subtropical parts of the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Monterey Bay to Baja California, including our very own La Jolla Cove. Enjoy a La Jolla kayak rental with these amazing fish.
Lots of Fish to see from on top of our Kayaks!
Garibaldi are renowned for their brilliant orange color and grow up to 35 centimeters in length. We can usually see the Garibaldi on our kayak tours along the La Jolla Cove area, just a few feet from the La Jolla Caves. They stand out quite well, as their bright orange color makes spotting them from on-top our kayaks easy. Want to get even closer? Check out our Kayak Snorkel Tour, available (May – October).
They live at depths of up to 30 meters, usually in association with reefs and typically over rocky sea-bottoms. We can often see the Garibaldi and other local La Jolla Marine Life in between the surf grass, which grows on top of the nearby rock reef. The surf grass provides protection from predators like the California sea lion, brown pelican, and other birds. Our guided kayak tour paddles atop the surf grass to look for the Garibaldi, and other fish that reside in La Jolla. The Garibaldi can be seen year round on our La Jolla kayak tour, please call in advance to reserve you kayak tour or rental. (858) 454-1010
They feed mainly on invertebrates that they remove from the rocks. Adult garibaldi maintain a home territory. The male clears a sheltered nest site within his territory, and the female then deposits eggs within the nest. The male subsequently guards the nest until the eggs hatch. The garibaldi is the official "marine fish" of the state of California and has a protected status in California coastal waters.
