La Jolla Sea Caves - The Clam's Cave
The Clam's Cave is the only cave oppening in La Jolla that is visible from the street along Coast Blvd. The Clam's Cave is double-sided, lending significance to the name "the clam," since a clam also has its two sides. The backside of the sea cave is visible from coast boulevard, a coastal walkway that begins at prospect and leads to La Jolla Cove. The other caves in La Jolla are only visible from the ocean and the only way to explore these other caves is by kayak, or to swim.

We usually enter this cave on our kayak tour, almost always; however, there is a bit of trickery involved when attempting to enter, and we do not recommend you try this on your own. We do require all of our guests to only enter the cave with the accompaniment of one of our Senior Tour Guides. We take great pride in our service, and the ability to take our kayak participants inside this cave, safely and repetitiously, as we strive to offer the best La Jolla Kayaking experience possible.
The La Jolla Sea Caves are made up of compacted sandstone and are naturally formed, by mother nature. Compacted over the year, wind, water, and rain have slowly eaten away at the structure of the cliffside. The Clam's unique shape allows kayakers to paddle through the cave's entrance, and out the other side during calm ocean conditions.
Sea lions are usually found sunbathing nearby the Clam's Cave on the rocks. This is a special treat during the seasons, as we observe these marine mammals on our kayak tour. Sea lions can be found year round at the near by La Jolla Childrens' Pool; however, a closer look at these beautiful California Sea lions can be accomplished while observing them from the nearby waters of the Cliffside on your sit-on-top.
We invite you to kayak the caves of La Jolla with one of our stable sit-on-top ocean kayaks. Kaykaing in La Jolla Shores is fun for all ages, and no experience is neccissary for or kayak rentals or tours of the La Jolla Cove. We do ask all kayak rentals to stay clear of the 7 caves; however, if you would like to enter the sea caves we have multiple tour times everyday. Please join one of our guided Tour of the 7 Caves to enter. The seven sea caves of La Jolla have quite a history, and is a focal point of interest for many visitors and locals to the San Diego area. The La Jolla Caves sits within the ecological reserve of La Jolla shores and the nearby La Jolla Cove.
The waters within La Jolla Shores are all part of an Ecological Reserve that is protected by law. This Underwater Ecological Reserve prohibits the removal of any archeological artifacts or any marine life, sea creatures, mollusks, fish, etc. Lobster trapping is allowed by permit only during the lobster-trapping season from October to March. Local La Jolla restaurants will advertise local lobster on their menus due to these spiny lobster in the kelp beds and Ecological Reserve. This lobster-trapping reference lends the name to the sea cave, Shopping Cart, as this limited “shopping” for lobster is very strictly monitored by the Fish & Game Department.
The best way to witness these spectacular naturally formed sea caves is to do so by kayaking La Jolla . Make reservations for our La Jolla Sea Caves Kayak Tour to witness this spectacular scenery.
