The Formation of the La Jolla Caves - Wind, water, waves,
The La Jolla Sea Caves were formed by the power of the ocean, as they destroyed weak zones along the coastal clifside over the past 75 million years of so. Most sea caves are formed by, wind, waves, rain, or bacteria, and usually a combination of all these tendencies.
Typically the week areas are some sort of fractured zone that was formed during slippage. It’s the inter-bedded layers of softer and harder areas along the make up the blueprint for cave’s future structure. In the case of the 7 Cave of La Jolla, the sandstone Cliffside is also composed of many other layers of rock like feldspar, and other softer rock layers that are more easily eroded than others.
Sea caves are not like lava caves, they generally don’t have tunnels, or life that sparks from the biology behind it. Typically sea caves are generally formed along side sandstone cliffs.
The sea cave may begin as a very narrow crack at first; however, over time wind and waves can exert a tremendous force upon the structure, causing the rock to crack from within. Of course the erosive power of Mother Nature is comprised of many different aspects. The weight of the water, and compression of air, combined with sand and rock that is carried by the waves produce additional erosion on the sides of the caves.
Sea caves may be explored in several ways, the best way is usually by kayak. With the help of a kayak or another small craft, you can explore the nearby treasures that are usually found outside the opening. We always require our customers to be accompanied by a tour guide when attempting to enter the clam’s cave. Entering any sea cave where the surf is active can become very dangerous, please leave it up to us professionals to aid you in your exploration of the 7 Sea Caves of La Jolla.
Sea caves are found all over the world. There are many different amazing structures along the Northern California coastline, and numerous types of caves along the Southern California coastline as well. You can find other sea caves along the coast of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California, and especially, California's Channel Islands.
