Pacific Beach: The San Diego beach town that never sleeps!
Pacific Beach is about 7 miles south of La Jolla. The local streets in Pacific Beach are named after gemstones, including Garnet, Opal, Sapphire, Tourmaline, Felspar, Diamond, Emerald, and Crystal. The local pier in Pacific Beach is called Crystal Pier, a public fishing pier. that we bike along on our bike tour. The pier is open to the public daily, but it closes at sunset for Crystal Pier Hotel guests, as the hotel is a series of cottages on the pier.
Pacific Beach is about 3 miles long and becomes Mission Beach and then South Mission Beach, and eventually ends at the channel entrance to Mission Bay. The channel entrance, known as the Jetty, cuts in eastward into Mission Bay and is Mission Bay’s only convergence point the ocean.
There is a paved Boardwalk in Pacific Beach from Crystal Pier all the way to the Jetty that is a popular site for daily rollerbladers, bikers, and joggers. The boardwalk is approximately 3 miles long and is a popular place for locals. Pacific Beach is the most popular of San Diego beaches and draws large crowds in summer. Pacific Beach is particularly popular during summer holiday weekends.
Pacific Beach is a very young beach town, home to many local students and young professionals. Pacific Beach is known well for its beach bar scene, a popular spot for
nightlife any night of the week. Opposite Crystal Pier is Garnet Avenue, the “mile of bars.” Garnet is the main drag in Pacific Beach that is full of unique shops, and of course the bars! Garnet Ave. is the site of the annual Pacific Beach Block Party in April, where the entire street is shut down for a street fiar and live bands. Even though the official Block Party ends late in the day, the party usually continues into the late hours of the night.
North Pacific Beach continues to the north of Garnet, but is visually separated by Crystal Pier; it is quieter and borders La Jolla at its northern most point. North Pacific Beach is home to Tourmaline Beach, a popular surf spot. Try our San Diego bike tours for a complete tour with our experienced guides of Pacific Beach, the Boardwalk and Crystal Pier.
